Damp Proofing

Damp Proofing and Damp Source Repairs

Damp proofing deals with tide marks, peeling paint, blown plaster and musty smells, but the right fix depends on the cause: rising damp from the ground, penetrating damp from rain getting in, or condensation inside. An injected damp proof course is the right call only for genuine rising damp. Where a gutter, chimney, flashing or pointing is letting water in, that is repaired first.

  • Outside checked first: ground levels, gutters, pointing, chimney and roof
  • Damp proof course injected only where rising damp is confirmed
  • Salt-damaged plaster replaced with a damp-suitable mix
  • Ventilation and heating advice where condensation is the cause

FAQs

Damp Proofing FAQs

How do I know if I have rising damp?

Genuine rising damp usually leaves a stained band no higher than about a metre on a ground-floor wall, often with white salts and crumbling plaster. Damp higher up, around windows or on upstairs walls is almost never rising damp. Because the signs overlap with other causes, we check the outside of the house before deciding what you have.

Is all damp rising damp?

No, and it is worth being wary of anyone who says otherwise. A lot of the damp we see comes from rain getting in through the roof, chimney, guttering or pointing, or from condensation inside. Those need the leak fixed or the ventilation improved. A damp proof course only helps with genuine rising damp, so we only recommend one where that is the cause.

How long does damp proofing take?

Injecting a damp proof course and replastering a room usually takes a few days, but outside repairs may need doing first. After replastering, the wall needs time to dry out before you decorate, which can be several weeks for a solid wall. We give you a clear idea of timescales once we know the cause.

What affects the cost of damp proofing?

Mainly the cause. A leaking gutter or failed flashing is a smaller job than injecting a damp course along several walls and replastering them. The length of wall, how it is built, how much plaster needs stripping and any outside repairs all play a part. The quote lists the external repairs and the internal work as separate lines, which lets you compare them.

What do I do to get a price for damp proofing?

Ring us, or use the quote form to describe which rooms and walls are affected. We come out and look at the affected walls and the outside of the house first, work out the likely cause, then give you a written quote for the work that will actually deal with it. The survey and the quote are both free.
