Felt Roof Repairs and Recovers

A felt roof can often be patched or recovered rather than stripped, as long as the deck beneath is dry and firm. Full replacement is the right call when the boards are soft, water is getting in, or an old single sheet has cracked across the roof. We lay layered systems, with a base sheet bonded to the deck and a hard-wearing mineral cap sheet on top.

  • Torch-on felt for open roofs with good working space
  • Self-adhesive felt beside timber fascias and roof lights, no flame
  • Two layers, so a nicked top sheet does not leak through
  • Fresh upstand layers tucked under the wall flashing

FAQs

Felt Roofs FAQs

Is a patch repair possible on my felt?

In many cases. Where the damage is local, say one torn lap or a tired upstand, we cut the bad section out and bond fresh felt over it. If the felt is cracked across the whole roof, or the boards beneath are soft, patching just moves the leak somewhere else, and a recover or replacement is better value. We will tell you honestly which applies once we have seen it.

What is the difference between torch-on and self-adhesive felt?

Torch-on felt is softened with a gas torch and bonded in place as it is rolled out. Self-adhesive felt has a sticky backing that grips without heat. The finished roof is much the same, but we choose self-adhesive next to timber fascias, roof light kerbs or any spot where open heat is unwise. Many roofs use a combination.

How long does it take to felt a flat roof?

A garage or small extension is usually finished in a day or two, provided the weather stays dry. If the deck has to be replaced first, allow a little longer. Felt cannot be laid on a wet surface, so on a showery day we may stop early and keep the roof sheeted over until conditions improve.

What changes the price of a felt roof?

The size of the roof, whether we can lay over the existing felt or need to strip it, how much decking needs replacing, and how many upstands, outlets and roof lights need detailing. Access counts as well: a roof reached from the garden is quicker to work on than one above a conservatory. Your quote lists each part of the work.

How do I get a quote for a felt roof?

Use the quote form or give us a call and tell us a little about the roof. We will come and look at it with a free survey, check the deck and the edges, and then send a free written quote saying whether we recommend a repair, a recover or a full replacement, and why.
