Dry Verge

Dry Verge Caps for Gable Ends

The verge is the sloping edge of the roof at a gable end, where the last tiles are usually bedded in mortar on an undercloak. Side winds and driving rain crack that mortar until it falls away and the edge tiles loosen. A dry verge is the right call on most interlocking concrete tile roofs once the mortar starts to fail.

  • Interlocking caps fixed into the ends of the tile battens
  • Closes the gaps birds and draughts use to get in
  • Slate, plain tile and bargeboard gables finished another way
  • Each unit locks into the one below it

FAQs

Dry Verge FAQs

How do I know my verge needs replacing?

Mortar fragments on the drive or in the garden below a gable, draughts or daylight in the loft near the gable wall, and edge tiles that rattle in the wind all point to a failing verge. We confirm the condition up close when we survey the roof.

Can dry verge be fitted to any roof?

No. It is designed for tiles that take a verge cap, which means most concrete interlocking tiles. Some slate roofs, plain tiles and gables with a projecting bargeboard need a different finish. That is why we check the roof before recommending it, rather than quoting from a photo alone.

How long does dry verge take to fit?

Once access is in place, the verges on a typical gable are often done within a day. More gables, longer verges, or edge tiles and battens that need repair add time. We let you know what to expect when we send the quote, so you can plan around it.

What affects the cost of dry verge?

The number and length of verges, the condition of the edge tiles and batten ends, and how the gable is reached. A single gable over a lawn is straightforward; one above a conservatory needs more thought about access. If the ridge is failing too, doing both together saves a second set of access.

How do I get a dry verge quote?

Ring us, or send the quote form saying how many gables the house has. The survey and quote are free: we check that dry verge suits your tiles, then send a written quote with the cap colour we propose and any tile or batten repairs listed separately.
