Moss Removal

Roof Moss Removal by Hand

Moss removal clears the thick cushions that grow on shaded slopes in wet Scottish weather. Unlike a thin film of algae, moss holds water like a sponge, wedges under tile edges and lifts them, and sheds clumps that block gutters and downpipes. It is the right call once growth is thick enough to lift tiles or choke the gutters.

  • Scrapers and stiff brushes worked with the laps of the tiles
  • No high-pressure blasting that strips tiles or forces water in
  • Moss killer applied to slow regrowth on damp slopes
  • Gutters and downpipes cleared so water drains away from walls

FAQs

Moss Removal FAQs

Is moss on my roof actually doing any harm?

A thin scattering is not urgent, but thick moss is worth dealing with. It holds water against the roof, works its way under tile edges and lifts them, and sheds clumps that block gutters and downpipes. In a wet climate like ours that damage builds over a few winters, so it is usually cheaper to clear it before tiles start to shift.

Why not just pressure wash the moss off?

High pressure can drive water up under the tiles and strip the surface of older tiles, which leaves them more porous and gives moss an easier foothold next time. Scraping and brushing by hand is slower, but it removes the moss without harming the roof, and it lets us see the condition of each area as we go.

How long does moss removal take?

Most roofs take between one and two days. It depends on how much moss there is, how big and steep the roof is, and how blocked the gutters are. The treatment needs a dry spell to work, so we plan the visit around the forecast where we can.

Will the moss come back?

In time, yes. Moss spores are carried on the wind, and shaded or north-facing slopes stay damp here for much of the year. The treatment slows regrowth a great deal, and cutting back overhanging trees helps. Many owners have the roof checked and treated every few years so the moss never gets thick enough to lift tiles again.

How do I arrange a moss removal quote?

Phone us, or use the quote form to give us your address and a short note about the roof. We look at the roof first to see how heavy the moss is and what state the gutters are in, then give you a written quote before anything is booked. The survey and the quote are both free.
