Number and length of hips

A fully hipped roof has four hips plus the ridge, so the total length of capping drives most of the material.

Verges included or not

How Our Dry Ridge & Hip Service Works

Step 1

Survey the whole roof

We check every hip, the ridge, any verges and the tile profile, and confirm a dry fix system suits your tiles before quoting the full package.

Step 2

Strip the hips and ridge

With access in place, hip and ridge tiles are lifted, old mortar is cleared away, and the cut tiles along each hip are checked and secured.

Step 3

Fit battens, roll and irons

Battens go up each hip and along the ridge, roll is dressed onto the tiles, and a hip iron is fixed at the foot of every hip.

Step 4

Fix tiles and review

Hip and ridge tiles are screwed and clipped down, junction caps go on and verges follow if included. Before we leave, we review the completed work with you on site, then confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Why do the hips need doing as well as the ridge?

Because they are bedded the same way and face the same weather, often more of it. On a hipped roof, fixing only the ridge leaves the longest runs of mortar on the roof to fail next. Doing the hips at the same time closes every bedded joint in one go, with one set of access.

Is a full dry fix system right for my roof?

It suits most roofs covered in modern concrete interlocking tiles, which is what many newer hipped houses have. Older roofs with clay or slate hips, or unusual ridge tiles, may be better re-bedded the traditional way. We look at the tiles and the hips before recommending anything.

How long does a dry ridge and hip job take?

Most hipped houses are done in a few days once the scaffold is up, depending on the number of hips, the length of ridge and whether verges or repairs are included. We plan the work so everything is finished before the access comes down, and give you the expected timescale with the quote.

What affects the price of a dry ridge and hip system?

The total length of hips and ridge, how many junctions there are, whether verges are included, the condition of the cut tiles along each hip, and how much scaffolding the house needs. Doing everything in one visit usually works out better value than separate jobs, because access is only paid for once.
