New Roofs

Concrete and Clay Tile Roofing

Re-tiling replaces a worn tiled covering with new tiles laid on a fresh membrane and battens. We work with concrete interlocking tiles, which are quick to lay and suit lower pitches, and with clay, including the small plain tiles found on older houses. It is the right call when tiles are slipping, crumbling or leaking across a whole slope rather than in one spot.

  • Profile and colour chosen to sit well beside neighbouring roofs
  • Battens set to the pitch and lap each tile needs
  • Extra fixings at verges, eaves and ridge courses against uplift
  • Discontinued tiles flagged at quote stage with the closest alternative

FAQs

Tile Roofs FAQs

Should I choose concrete or clay tiles?

Concrete interlocking tiles are cost effective, quick to lay and suit a wide range of pitches. Clay tiles, and plain tiles in particular, weather well and suit older or character houses, but cost more and need a steeper roof. We usually recommend whatever sits best with your house and the street, then you decide.

Can you match my new tiles to the neighbours?

In most cases we can get very close. Many common concrete profiles are still made, and for clay we look for a tile of similar colour and texture. If the original has been discontinued we tell you before you commit, rather than leaving you to discover a mismatch once the roof is finished.

Will new tiles stand up to the wind here?

A new tiled roof is fixed to suit its exposure, with nails and clips holding tiles down at the verges, eaves and ridge. That is a big step up from many older roofs, where tiles were only hung on battens and relied on their own weight to stay in place.

What affects the cost of re-tiling?

Roof size, pitch and shape set most of the cost, followed by the tile you pick and how many hips, valleys and abutments need detailing. Any timber repairs found once the old tiles are off are explained to you and agreed before they are done.

How do I get a tile roof quote?

Phone, or describe your roof briefly on the quote form. We come out to look at the tiles, the pitch and the neighbouring roofs, and the survey and quote are both free. The quote names the tile we suggest and any alternatives worth considering.
